Abstract
On July 19, 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front marched triumphantly into Managua. Over 50,000 people had given their lives in the war to overthrow the Somoza dictatorship, whose fifty dark years had left the country in ruins. The Nicaraguan people believed the nightmare was over, and that they could finally build a new, more just society in peace. Yet within months of the triumph the United States was beating the war drums against Nicaragua.
