Abstract

This summary of Newton's telescope is directed towards the needs of physics teachers of secondary school level. The basic design, together with the benefits of the compact design over unwieldy refracting telescopes are described. The elimination of objective colour aberration is mentioned as well as the technical difficulties of preparing the concave metal speculum. An account is given of how the new instrument was received by the astronomical community. It is suggested how the information in this review may be used in the class situation.
