Abstract

The development of onium salt photoinititors for cationic polymerization has made possible to carry out the rapid, environmentally attractive polymerization of various mono and multifunctional vinyl and heterocyclic monomers. Such monomerphotoinitiator systems can be used in a wide variety of applications including protective and decorative coatings, printing inks and adhesives. Mechanisms for the photolysis of the photoinitiators and their action in the initiation of cationic polymerization are presented.
