Abstract

A new species of bothid flatfish, Psettina senta, is described from off Western Australia. The new species, having specialized body scales with a single strong long spinule, is easily distinguished from all other species of Psettina, which have 20 to 30 slender long ctenii peripherally on the body scales. A rare species, P. variegata, previously known only from two type specimens from Philippine waters and the China Sea, is here recorded for the second time, and for the first time from the Southern Hemisphere. Although first described as Bothus (Crossobothus) variegatus and subsequently listed as Psettina without further discussion, generic placement of Psettina variegata is confirmed. This species is characterized by a slender body and a large blackish blotch on the center of the caudal fin.
