Abstract

Abstract The syntheses and X-ray structural characterization of four new polymorphs of coordination complexes containing the hydrotris(triazolyl)borate anion, M[BH(trz)3]2 (trz = 1,2,4-trizolate; M = Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+) are presented. The complexes were characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and IR spectroscopy. The metal ion is chelated by the endodentate nitrogen atoms of two [BH(trz)3]− ligands and crystallizes in the absence of solvent. The materials are stable in solution and in air. PXRD data indicate that this is the decomposition product of the previously synthesized M[BH(trz)3]2·6H2O. Fe[BH(trz)3]2 is a thermochromic spin-crossover compound with Tsc = 333 K.
