Abstract
What is the Center for Pharmacy Practice Accreditation (CPPA)? CPPA is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that was established in 2012 by the American Pharmacists Association, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The three partner organizations identified a need for an accreditation body within the pharmacy profession to achieve the goal of providing the public with specific, predictable, and measurable pharmacy-based patient care services. Recognizing the breadth and complexity of the medication-use process, these organizations wanted a single, integrated accreditation body, one with strong medication-use knowledge and experience with the medication-use process, to accredit pharmacy practice in various healthcare settings. CPPA was established to develop and implement comprehensive programs of pharmacy practice site accreditation and to manage the process leading to the use of consensus-based standards for pharmacy practice accreditation. The mission of CPPA is to serve the public health by raising the level of pharmacy-delivered patient care services through accreditation of the pharmacy practice. The voluntary accreditation programs offered by CPPA recognize pharmacy practices that promote practice innovation and empower pharmacists to practice at a higher level as a means to continually improve the safety and quality of patient care services.
