Abstract

R. J. Balkan, G. S. Ellis Jr and H. S. Eustis (editors) New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology: At the Crossings: Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus 313 pages, 131 figures Kugler Publications, The Hague, 2004 ISBN: 90 6299198 x Price: €105.00/$125.00 This book consists of the proceedings of the 52nd Annual Symposium of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology, held in New Orleans in February 2003. Unique to this meeting was the participation of three legendary figures within the world of paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, namely Marshall Parks, Arthur Jampolsky and Gunter von Noorden. The rest of the list of distinguished speakers at this meeting was also impressive and several of them gave multiple presentations on their particular area. The book is divided into three sections consisting of updates on cataract and refractive issues, amblyopia and strabismus, and oculoplastics. Each section concludes with a round table discussion with the experts in the field and a short question and answer section. The text is beautifully illustrated with many high quality colour photographs and line drawings and all chapters seem well referenced. The presentations respond to both basic questions, such as the aetiology of dissociated verticle deviation (DVD), as well as basic clinical questions, such as how to deal with childhood ptosis. I found the book very interesting and, although it might not end up on every paediatric ophthalmologist's bookshelf, I think it merits a place in the clinic library.
