Abstract

Tests have indicated that a high proportion of rock bolts are not performing satisfactorily, often without this being obvious to the operator. A table shows possible reasons for unsatisfactory installation for different types of bolt. Resin bolts provide the biggest cause for concern. Tests to determine the integrity of rock bolt installations are being developed. A new type of bolt is described which provides anchorage on installation and allows for follow-up checks when required.
