Abstract

Following investigation into 28 separate leaves of the gutenberg bible, a complete copy from the doheny library was similarly analysed, using pixe analysis. Carried out during a continuous 41-hour operation. First ink on the verso from folio 1to folio 324 was examined, then the recto side ink was examined, first on those leaves where the copper/lead ratio on the verso was puzzling, then finally on as many leaves as could be managed within time and funding limitations. The results showed that, throughout the first printing, all the inks are of a high metallic content new mixtures were made at frequent intervals, as shown in the pattern of cu/pb ratios; these are an effectivekey to reconstructing the production history of the gutenberg bible. The ink is being further analysed, but it is suggested that it contains cupric and lead oxides. The ink analyses are also related in detail to previously published bibliographical findings.
