Abstract

The design of a sensitive current transformer is presented in this work. Such a device is based in the detection of an induced voltage in a toroidal pick-up coil wound around a high permeability nucleus, when an ac electrical current (frequency: 50 Hz) flows through a conductor wire coaxial with its axis. In the present device, the use of a nearly zero magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon (Co 71.3Fe 3.7Si 15B 10) as the ferromagnetic nucleus, is analyzed and compared with the sensor response employing a Fe-based highly magnetostrictive amorphous ribbon (Fe 73.5Si 13.5B 9Cu 1Nb 3). The performed analysis has allowed us to develop a final prototype with similar accuracy than the commercial Hall clamp meter devices.
