Abstract

Inelastic neutron scattering and polarized neutron diffraction experiments on Yb4As3 revealed that it exhibits typical behaviors of a 1D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperatures due to the formation of 1D arrays of Yb3+ ions by the charge-ordering transition. The staggered field effects on the Yb3+ chains induced by applying a magnetic field were also detected by the neutron scattering experiments.
