Abstract

The crystal and magnetic structure of Ga substituted MnAl alloys has been investigated by neutron diffraction. Gallium atoms are found to occupy both the (0,0,0) and ( (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) ) crystallographic sites [differently from Al which occupy ( (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) ) sites] and have a preference for the ( (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) , (1)/(2) ) site. The magnetic structure is tetragonal with antiferromagnetic coupling between the two sites and a Mn moment of approximately 1.90 μB. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy has been studied by the singular point detection method. Gallium substitution has been found to decrease the overall anisotropy. Similar investigations on MnAl and MnAlC alloys with Mn=68 wt. % have confirmed the crystal and magnetic structure and magnetic anisotropy of previous investigations of alloys with Mn>68 wt. %.
