Neuroticism as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Peer Conformity and Cyberbullying

Cyberbullying is a phenomenon that often occurs in adolescents and can be caused by conformity or personality. This study aimed to evaluate whether neurotic personality can strengthen or weaken the relationship between conformity and cyberbullying in adolescents. The participants were 140 adolescents aged 12–15 years old, all of whom were active social media users and had been involved in cyberbullying. Cyberbullying was measured on a scale created by the researchers (α = 0.863), conformity was measured using a peer conformity scale (α = 0.846), and neuroticism was measured using a scale that had been previously adapted into the Indonesian language and culture (α = 0.766). Data were analyzed quantitatively using PROCESS. The results showed that low levels of neuroticism could moderate or strengthen the relationship between conformity and cyberbullying. Future researchers might test moderating variables other than neuroticism to obtain new findings. Based on the current study, parents are advised to help children select their friendship environments to prevent cyberbullying behavior. Schools can create intervention programs to prevent cyberbullying, especially for adolescents who display neuroticism. School counselors and parents can create a positive friendship environment so that adolescents do not become perpetrators or victims of cyberbullying. Parents are additionally advised to limit the use of digital devices among their adolescents.

Motives Behind Active Facebook, Instagram and Other Social Media Users

Social media (SM) is ‘the’ place individuals use to socialize, connect and share up-to-date information with other parties. According to The Uses and Gratification theory (U>), individuals have needs to satisfy to feel gratified; they use SM to satisfy these personal needs to achieve self-gratification. Gratifications differ for individuals depending on their background and types of SM medium used. Question is, what are the motives behind SM user’s activeness behaviour in their medium of choice in Malaysia’s scenario? Seven common motives, namely, watching, impressing, acting, surveillance, documentation, coolness and creativity were hypothesized to have significant influences over SM users’ activeness behaviour. The study disseminated online surveys to targeted and willing active SM users in the research; it resulted in 397 useable data for analysis. Overall, the study managed to identify four motives, namely, watching, impressing, documentation and coolness as the drivers behind activeness behaviour of SM users in Malaysia. The study also identifies FB as the most popular SM, followed by IG. Further segmentation analysis on each FB-active (n=125), IG-active (n=100) and other SM-active (n=82) found that the main motive for FB users was to impress (impressing) others; for IG users, the main reason was to watch others (watching). As for other SM-active, three motives emerged, i.e. watching, surveillance and documentation. The findings imply the usefulness of U> in explaining individual’s motives for being active SM user as well as importance of motives behind activeness of SM user’s behaviour for different types of SMs.

The Influence of Big Five Personality Traits on Social Overload in Active Social Media Users

This research is motivated by social overload which occurs as one of the negative impacts of using social media. The aim of this research is to determine the influence of the big five personalities on the level of social oveload in active social media users. The population in this study are active social media users. The sample in this study consisted of 307 respondents who were active social media users. The sampling technique is nonprobability sampling with the Accidental Sampling method. The data collection method in this research uses a Likert scale with two instruments, namely the social overflow scale and the International Personality Item Pool-Big Five Factor Marker 25 Scale (IPIP-BFM-25). The data analysis technique used is the Spearman correlation test. The results of the analysis test in this study show that there is an influence of the Big Five Personality on Social overload with extraversion, agreeableness and emotional stability which have a significance of <0.05 for active social media users. This study proves that individual personality traits can affect the risk of experiencing social overload. The results found that individuals with high Extraversion traits, agreeableness, and low emotional stability (neuroticism) were more susceptible to social overload. This study also found that individuals who use social media for about one to two hours are still considered safe, compared to individuals who play social media for more than three hours. Therefore, the recommended time for using social media is no more than 3 hours a day.

Learning The Indonesian Language And Culture as A Gateway to Intercultural Communication

This community service implements the Memorandum of Understanding between Amikom Purwokerto University and Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (HCU), Thailand. This community service initiative emphasises the importance of learning the Indonesian culture and language. This topic is important because HCU English study program students interact and communicate with students from other countries, including Indonesia. The training materials cover Indonesian culture, including knowledge of Indonesian traditions, customs, habits, traditional cuisine, traditional clothing, and the Indonesian language. In addition, this training also explains the position and role of English in Indonesia. During the training, participants learn and practice simple Indonesian language to communicate lightly with Indonesians in person and via social media. After completing the training, based on the evaluation provided via Google Forms, participants gain more knowledge and understanding of Indonesian culture and language.

Reflection and Creativity Levels in Active Social Media Users

Introduction. This article, as one of the few research articles, explores the interrelation between creativity and participation in social network. It also studies the level of reflection in active virtual space users. The need for investigation is justified by the explosion in the number of social media users over the 2021 to 2022 period.Purpose. In our work, we will do research on the relationship between activity on social media and levels of reflection and creativity in active social media users.Materials and Methods. To achieve practical objectives, we used several psychological methods: The Differential Test of Reflexivity (DTR) by D. A. Leontiev and E. N. Osin, Diagnostics of Trait Creativity by E. E. Tunik, and the authors’ questionnaire for social media participation measure. The Mann-Whitney test and the Pearson correlation coefficient were chosen as mathematical statistics tools. 145 respondents of different age and occupation, students of the “Media Communications and Multimedia Technologies” faculty, and freelancers participated in the study.Results. We found that active users have higher scores on the “Quasi-reflection” scale. They distract themselves by diving in a virtual world that is full of affairs and experience, but has no relation to the real-life concerns. The level of creativity in active and inactive social media users does not have a significant difference. Discussion and Conclusion. The data obtained do not go in accordance with previously conducted studies on the interrelation between creativity and reflection in social media users, nor between activity in the network and reflection level. Therefore, the present research pushes the envelope on psychological characteristics of the personality, reveal themselves in social media, and influence behaviour in virtual social space. Our work expands the diagnostic program for research on psychological predictors of the information behaviour of the personality.

You May Worry, But Can You Recognize Threats When You See Them?; Neuroticism, Threat Identifications, and Negative Affect

The present studies sought to investigate the hedonic consequences of threat-identification skills at low and high levels of neuroticism. Such skills were assessed in terms of both speed (Study 1) and accuracy (Study 2) of identifying threatening objects in cognitive tasks. As predicted, threat-identification skills interacted with trait neuroticism in predicting subjective experiences. Specifically, individuals high in neuroticism experienced lower levels of negative affect during their everyday lives if they were also skilled in identifying threats in the cognitive tasks (Studies 1-2). Such skills did not matter at low levels of neuroticism. This interactive pattern was also replicated in the context of life domain satisfaction (Study 2). The results support the view that avoidance motivation encompasses multiple component processes, including some that are cognitive in nature, and specifically extends self-regulatory views of neuroticism. Of most importance, our data indicate that threat-identification skills can be hedonically beneficial, rather than costly, at high levels of neuroticism.

The EPIC-26 domain scores after radical prostatectomy are associated with the personality trait of neuroticism

PurposeThe personality trait of neuroticism represents vulnerability for mental distress to somatic health problems. There are few studies of neuroticism in prostate cancer patients. This study examines the levels of self-reported adverse effects (AEs) after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RALP) in Norwegian men with high or low levels of neuroticism. Neuroticism is also compared to relevant factors concerning their associations with various AEs.MethodsAmong 982 men who had RALP at Oslo University Hospital, Radiumhospitalet between 2005 and 2010, 79% responded to a mailed questionnaire in 2011. They rated AEs by completing the EPIC-26 questionnaire, and neuroticism on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Men with < 1 year’s follow-up, treatment failure, and incomplete EPQ responses were omitted, leaving 524 men for analysis. The EPQ responses were dichotomized into low and high level of neuroticism. Stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses were used for examination of associations with the EPIC-26 domain scores.ResultsHigh neuroticism was reported by 20% (95% CI 17–23%) of the patients. On the EPIC-26 dimensions men with high neuroticism had significantly lower mean scores than men with low neuroticism. Most of these between-group differences were clinically significant. In multivariate regression analyses, high neuroticism contributed significantly to all EPIC-26 domains.ConclusionIncreased levels of AEs after RALP are significantly associated with high neuroticism. A short screening test should be added to the current EPIC-26 instrument to identify patients with high neuroticism. In these patients, pre-operative counseling should take into account their risk of increased AE experiences.

The impact of university brand identification and eWOM behaviour on students’ psychological well-being: a multi-group analysis among active and passive social media users

Encouraging students to share positive online reviews should not be regarded only as a marketing tool. This study aims to examine (i) the relationship between positive online reviews behaviour for university and students’ well-being; and (ii) the impact of eWOM behaviour on students’ psychological well-being among active (those who share and read information) and passive (those who only read information) social media users. An online survey was conducted to examine the interplay of university brand identification, positive eWOM behaviour, and university life satisfaction on students’ psychological well-being. Results found that students who share positive reviews about university on social media tend to have better psychological health. This study also revealed that active social media users benefit more in terms of well-being through sharing positive online reviews about their universities. Implications for theory and practice of social media marketing in the higher education context are discussed.

Characterization of Cyberbullying Victimization and Perpetration Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Spain.

Cyberbullying is an extremely damaging form of interpersonal violence. Little is yet known about cyberbullying behaviors in the child and youth population during the COVID-19 pandemic and what effect this reduction in face-to-face social interactions has had on an increase in socialization via the Internet and cyberbullying. The present study is a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in young people between the ages of 12 and 27 years attending two secondary schools in southern Spain (N = 733) to examine differences regarding sociodemographic characteristics, academic performance, and digital device use (independent variables) in the experiences of cybervictimization, cyberperpetration, and adverse psychological effects (dependent variables). Logistic regression models were constructed for each of the dependent variables including the independent variables mentioned above. More than 50 percent of the sample were victims of cyberbullying. Females and the LGBTIQ+ Community were at greater risk of being cybervictims and suffer adverse psychological effects. A total of 22.8 percent of the students reported having been victims and 26.5 percent perpetrators of cyberbullying for the first time during the COVID-19 pandemic, but no other major differences were observed. These findings point out that cyberbullying must be prioritized in public policy as part of an overall strategy for combating violence in childhood and adolescence, as well as gender-based and discriminatory violence.

Gender-Specific Pathways between Face-to-Face and Cyber Bullying Victimization, Depressive Symptoms, and Academic Performance among U.S. Adolescents

This cross-sectional study employed a syndemic framework to investigate the relationships between face-to-face and cyberbullying victimization, depressive symptoms, academic performance, and gender (female and male) in a nationally representative sample of adolescents who completed the United States 2015 Youth Risk Behavior System Survey. Path analysis results showed that both face-to-face and cyberbullying victimization are associated with low academic performance. Further, depressive symptoms may facilitate declining academic performance for both female and male students. After using a syndemic framework to analyze the joint risk presented by bullying victimization and depression, structural equation modeling showed two different pathways for students who experienced both face-to-face and cyberbullying: (1) for female students, depression fully mediated the relationship between bullying victimization and low academic performance; (2) for male students, depression partially mediated the relationship between bullying victimization and low academic performance. These study findings highlight the need for innovative interventions to address bullying victimization, depression, and low academic performance. Specifically, school health educators, counselors, social workers, and school administrators should work together to initiate programs that address the synergistic nature of bullying through gender-sensitive multicomponent interventions, such as concurrently implementing comprehensive screening protocols and a bullying reporting system in their school system.

Brand love is all around: loyalty behaviour, active and passive social media users

This study posits that the satisfaction derived from a visit to a theme park triggers positive emotions which, in turn, impact on revisit intention, word-of-mouth (WOM) and electronic WOM (eWOM), through the moderating effect of social media usage. We explore whether satisfaction elicited by the cognitive evaluation of a tourist brand (rational attribute) can, in addition, trigger a passionate feeling towards a brand and if, in the tourist context, brand love can be a mediator of the relationship between consumer satisfaction and positive emotion. We also test the moderating effect of social media usage on the influence of positive emotions on post-purchase behaviour. The hypotheses are tested using structural equation modelling. The findings suggest that the influence of emotion on post-purchase behaviour is more important for active users of social media than for passive users (lurkers), as it influences their revisit intentions, WOM and eWOM. Brand love mediates the relationship between satisfaction and emotion for active social media users.

This study was motivated by the reality that people do not fully understand the proper use of Indonesian, especially in terms of standard vocabulary, terminology, and synonyms. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to promote Indonesian language skills through educational content in the form of digital posters on Instagram in order to reach a wider audience. In addition, the author also used the Kahoot! application as an evaluation tool to measure social media users' understanding of standard vocabulary. The method used in this study was a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The subjects of this study were the general public who are active users of social media, especially on the Instagram platform, and there were 34 respondents. The object of this study was the respondents' answers to the quiz on the Kahoot! application. The results of this study concluded that there is still a low level of enthusiasm among the public, especially students, in using Indonesian. However, this can be minimized through the use of social media, such as the creation of interesting educational content in the form of digital posters, which have proven to be effective as an effort to foster Indonesian language in the era of digitalization.

This paper discusses the epic Ramayana as a medium for teaching Indonesian culture and Indonesian language for the students of Darmasiswa RI / DRI (Darmasiswa of Republic of Indonesia). The epic Ramayana story contains adjective phrases as a media for teaching Indonesian culture which is full of the value of character education. This paper can be a reference for students and teachers who study and teach Indonesian culture and also Indonesian language for foreign speakers. Besides, it can also be beneficial for those who want to learn more about the structure of Indonesian language and character education of with the values of Indonesian culture in accordance with Ramayana text in which good character and personality become the main goal of national education in Indonesia. The research methodology statement is missing in this abstract. Considering that the Darmasiswa RI program is also part of education in Indonesia, the education of Indonesian character values cannot be separated from the education followed by Darmasiswa RI program participants. For this reason, there are two main points discussed in this paper, (1) the Ramayana text as a medium for teaching Indonesian culture and enhancing the mastery of Indonesian language and (2) the adjective phrase in the Ramayana text as a medium for the education of Indonesian character values. Theoretically and practically, this paper can contribute to the world of education both in terms of Indonesian culture and language and the noble values of Indonesian characters for foreign speakers, so that it can help in improving the success of national education, and also to improve the competitiveness of the nation.

Pemaknaan The Power of Emak-Emak di Media Sosial

The movement of the Power of Emak-Emak in the 2019 Presidential Election became significant considering a large number of female voters in the 2019 Presidential Election. Besides potential voters, women were also active social media users. This study aims to see the meaning of mothers towards the movement of The Power of Emak-Emak in relation to women's political participation in Indonesia. This study uses the Reception Analysis by Stuart Hall. The approach used is qualitative by conducting in-depth interviews with four active social media users. The results of the study showed that the dominant meaning of The Power of Emak-Emak Movement was part of the active role in women's political participation in the 2019 Presidential Election.

Assessing psychological antecedents of vaccination in family health center visitors.

This study evaluates the psychological factors influencing vaccination attitudes and behaviors among individuals visiting family health centers. Using the 5C model, the study identifies key determinants affecting vaccination intention and hesitancy, providing insights into strategies to enhance vaccine acceptance. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1712 adults aged 18 and over in Ankara, Turkey. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, covering socio-demographic characteristics, vaccination attitudes, and internet usage. The Turkish version of the 'Psychological Antecedents of Vaccination (5C) Scale' was used to assess participants' responses. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors influencing vaccination intention. Individuals whose income exceeds their expenses (OR: 1.532, 95% CI: 1.107-2.119), those who received the COVID-19 vaccine (OR: 2.362, 95% CI: 1.429-3.906), and those who are not active social media users (OR: 1.417, 95% CI: 1.096-1.833) were more likely to get vaccinated without hesitation. Higher confidence (OR: 1.268, 95% CI: 1.231-1.306) and collective responsibility (OR: 1.083, 95% CI: 1.046-1.122) scores were associated with increased willingness to vaccinate, while higher calculation scores (OR: 0.932, 95% CI: 0.899-0.965) were linked to hesitancy. The findings suggest that fostering confidence and collective responsibility is crucial for improving vaccine acceptance. Communication strategies should be tailored to reduce hesitancy among active social media users. Future research should explore the underlying risk factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy in different populations.

Social media adoption in disaster restoration industry

Purpose – This research aims to investigate the current patterns of social media adoption for marketing in the restoration industry and analyse the strategies used by those restoration companies that have adopted social media. Social media marketing has been proven as a cost-effective way to engage new customers, and especially useful for small businesses. The disaster “restoration industry” is the special sector of general contracting that serves both commercial and residential property owners in terms of restoring their disaster-affected property. The restoration industry is characterised by small-business domination and constant need of new customers to survive in the market. Many restoration contractors have started adopting social media for marketing. However, goals and social media marketing strategies have not yet been clearly articulated. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected through a systematic content analysis (CA) of sample restoration companies’ Facebook and Twitter posts over a 30-day study period. After a preliminary investigation of the industry, the researchers selected the Restoration Industry Association (RIA) member companies, as the research population. Sixty companies were randomly selected from the 1,165 RIA member companies, which equals to 5 per cent of the population. Reliability was tested statistically using Cohen’s Kappa. Findings – Three levels of adoption were derived from the data: active users, non-active users and non-adopters. More than half of the sample companies were found to have adopted at least one social media channel for marketing. However, only 26 out of the 60 sample companies were active on the social media that they have adopted. Active adopters showed, on average, relatively frequent usage patterns, with 10 Facebook posts and 37 tweets in a 30-day period. Sampled restoration companies which were active social media users posted mostly announcements and educational information of Facebook and used Twitter for news and direct interaction with customers. The observed companies revealed a mix of business-relevant content and personalised content including personal greetings, sharing of photos about holidays and fun events. Research limitations/implications – Three levels of adoption were derived from the data: active users, non-active users and non-adopters. More than half of the sample companies were found to have adopted at least one social media channel for marketing. However, only 26 out of the 60 sample companies were active on the social media that they have adopted. Active adopters showed, on average, relatively frequent usage patterns, with 10 Facebook posts and 37 tweets in a 30-day period. Sampled restoration companies that were active social media users posted mostly announcements and educational information of Facebook and used Twitter for news and direct interaction with customers. Practical implications – The results showed that social media adoption has not yet penetrated the restoration industry – the adoption rate of 65 per cent is significantly lower than the 77 per cent of companies in all industries. In-depth CA of active social media users revealed patterns of engagement on Facebook and Twitter. This paper built on those patterns to emphasise strategies restoration companies can use to build interpersonal relationships and trust, which can lead to increased word-of-mouth recommendations; facilitate customer contact through a cross-linking strategy; and engage in simple methods for search engine optimisation. These strategic recommendations are grounded in existing practices and, therefore, are feasible and accessible for disaster restoration companies. Originality/value – The research results showed how the construction industry, especially small businesses, has adopted social media for marketing. A snapshot of the industry’s level of social media adoption for marketing strategy can provide a useful reference point about the industry’s practices and potential future directions. This paper provides suggestions about effective social media marketing strategies. The paper also illustrates the use of CA as a promising method for research in construction management.
