Abstract

672 June1990 Vol.41 No. 6 Hospital and Community Psychiatry the inpatient unit. After discharge, the most important factor in maintaming improvement in the child’s behavior was the family’s ability to put into practice the new techniques they had learned during the child’s hospitalization. The average length of stay, 77 days, may seem luxurious in the current environment of managed care. In another study, the average length of stay of ten nonautistic preschoolers was 410 days (6). The unit descnibed in this paper now uses partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment to decrease inpatient lengths of stay. At the time of discharge, almost all of the families were enthusiastic about the progress them children had made, and all families resolved to continue the children in outpatient or partial hospital treatment.
