Neighborhood Green Spaces and Social Capital: The Mediating Role of Affordances and Motivations to Use
Green spaces have the potential to foster social capital, yet we do not fully understand what motivates people to use these spaces and how green space use leads to social benefits. Recent studies suggest that perceptions of green space are more important than just physical attributes in encouraging usage and fostering social connections. Perceptions can determine green space usage, but we do not yet know exactly how perceptions of green space relate to social capital. We conducted a series of perception studies among residents of eight public housing estates in Singapore, to demonstrate that affordances serve as a bridge between the physical characteristics of a place and the ways people perceive and use it. These affordances – reflected in experiences of vitality , enjoyment , and comfort – shape motivations for use, such as exercising, socializing, and relaxing, which in turn foster stronger social capital.

Based on survey data conducted in Guangzhou in 2021, this study employs canonical correlation analysis (CCA) to evaluate the relationship between neighborhood green space, residents' green space use behavior, and their mental health. The results show that compared with the objectively measured accessibility, residents' subjective perceived accessibility of neighborhood green space plays a greater role in promoting green space use behavior and mental health. Meanwhile, the plant diversity, safety, and the number of recreational facilities in a green space can promote the frequency of green space use, improve residents' mental health status and reduce their perceived stress. Although perceived accessibility is more related to green space use behavior than green space quality indicators, green space safety and recreational facilities have many more benefits on mental health than perceived accessibility. In addition, residents' green space use behavior, especially green space visit frequency, can promote mental health and reduce perceived stress.

In Sub-Saharan Africa and other developing regions, there has been very little systematic attempt to document the uses and perceived health benefits of urban green spaces in cities and the factors influencing usage. We therefore sought to establish the availability, accessibility and use of urban green spaces, and the perceived health benefits in an African population. We also ascertained the factors influencing use and development of green spaces at home. A population-based survey was conducted in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, spanning 11 Municipal and 3 Sub-Metropolitan areas. Multivariable binary logistic regression adjusting for potential confounders was used to establish the association between green space use and development at home, and socio-demographic, neighbourhood and health factors. Odds ratios and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals were estimated from the models. Several socio-demographic (gender, age, marital status, occupation, ethnicity, religion) and district-level (population density, income level, neighbourhood greenness) factors were associated with use of green spaces and development of green spaces at home in Accra. Residents who were worried about depletion of green spaces in their community were more likely to develop green spaces at home. In neighbourhoods with moderate and high level of greenness, residents were less likely to develop green spaces at home. Five-percent and 47% of green space users in Accra reported witnessing an improvement in their physical and mental health, respectively, from use of green spaces. The study findings can inform policy action for promoting use and development of green spaces in African cities and for mitigating depletion and degradation of the limited urban greenery.

Despite the myriad advantages offered by urban green spaces, such as fostering social interaction, mitigating the impact of urban stressors, and promoting active lifestyles, the benefits arising from such spaces are often influenced by gender and cultural norms. Gender inequities persist in the perception and use of public green spaces, particularly in informal settlements in the Global South, impacting women’s well-being and urban experience. This study explores perceptions and barriers to women’s use of green spaces in informal settlements of Tehran, Iran. Drawing on original empirical research conducted in two informal settlements in Tehran, this chapter identifies patriarchal norms, societal expectations, and safety concerns as key barriers limiting women’s use of public green spaces. The findings highlight the importance of contextual sensitivity in park design and the need for community engagement to create inclusive green spaces that respond to the diverse needs of urban residents.

It has been well established that gentrification can undermine access to green amenities for socially vulnerable residents through socio-cultural or physical displacement from working-class and minority neighbourhoods. However, in the growing literature on environmental gentrification, little attention has been given to the impacts of gentrification on young families and children, especially in neighbourhood green spaces where children socialise and play. Using observational methods, surveys and interviews, we assessed perceptions and use of green play spaces in two neighbourhoods of Barcelona at different stages of gentrification. One neighbourhood suffers from advanced residential, commercial and tourism-led gentrification (La Ribera) while the other (Poblenou) experiences more recent gentrification. We find that advanced and more complex processes of gentrification are more likely to be associated with dissatisfaction of public space and less use by children and families. We also observe lower levels of trust, increased delinquency and a greater sense of insecurity. In contrast, early-stage gentrification is linked to new place relations and attachment around green play spaces that are highly used by children and their families. Yet, our research also shows that neighbourhood gains in terms of increased access and use of green play spaces might be short-lived as residents there point to fear of displacement. Our findings thus reveal how gentrification can operate to offer short-term green benefits but possible long-term losses for socially vulnerable families in gentrifying neighbourhoods.

ContextThe restrictions imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the relationship between humans and their environment. The studies analyzed focus mainly on urban spaces during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to assess the changes that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused in the relation between humans and nature, including the view, use, and perception of green spaces.MethodsThis review was performed by keyword searches in the main bibliographic repositories. We included all studies that examined the relationship between green spaces and nature during the COVID-19 pandemic. The search was restricted to studies published in English from the end of 2019 until the end of March 2021. Following the inclusion criteria, a total of 31 articles were analyzed.ResultsThe COVID-19 pandemic has modified the relationship between population and green spaces. In countries with fewer restrictions, some travel was permitted, and green spaces could be visited. Countries with more severe restrictions, such as Spain and Italy, registered a significant reduction in the use of green spaces, especially during home confinement. The issues addressed by most studies analyzed include variations in access and use to green space and its economic inequalities, the influence of views of green space on well-being and the associations between COVID-19 rates and availability of green spaces from the beginning of the pandemic until March 2021.ConclusionThe different government responses to COVID-19 have influenced the access to and use of green spaces, showing an increase in the exposure and appreciation of green spaces. Green spaces have increased the resilience of both cities and their residents, especially during the pandemic lockdown.

Urban green space use is often associated with improved physical and mental health and lower noncommunicable disease (NCDs) burdens. Factors that influence green space visits have been documented in cities of the Global North, but evidence of urban green space use patterns for cities in the Global South is scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate factors influencing urban green space use patterns in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a megacity of the Global South, with a particular focus on how poor health condition and healthcare professionals’ prescriptions to exercise outdoors (park prescriptions—ParkRx) impact the green space use of middle-aged adults. We collected green space characteristics and use factors (i.e., availability, accessibility, attractiveness, and attachment), health condition, ParkRx, and urban green space use intensity (i.e., frequency and duration) via a self-reported questionnaire from 169 middle-aged residents of Dhaka. We used multivariate modeling to estimate the association of green space characteristics, health condition, and ParkRx with use intensity. We further applied a mediation analysis to determine the influence of ParkRx on the relationship between residents’ poor health conditions and use intensity. We found that green space availability and accessibility did not significantly influence use intensity, but attractiveness was negatively associated with use intensity. Green space use intensity was significantly and positively associated with attachment to the green space, poor health condition (i.e., having noncommunicable diseases), and ParkRx. ParkRx significantly mediated the relationship between health condition and use intensity. We observed limited supply, poor access, and low attractiveness when studying the urban green spaces in Dhaka, but these qualities did not affect use intensity, as found in many case studies in the Global North. In contrast, urban green space use intensity in our case study is mostly dependent on poor health condition and park prescriptions.

The usage, constraints and preferences of green space at disadvantage neighborhood: A review of empirical evidence

Although most fractures, and about half of hip fractures, occur outdoors among older women, limited research has uncovered neighborhood predictors for fractures among older women. This study assessed the independent associations of neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES), walkability, and green space with incident any and hip fracture among postmenopausal women. The Women's Health Initiative recruited a national sample of postmenopausal women (50-79yr) across 40 U.S. clinical centers and conducted yearly assessments from 1993 to 2012 (n = 161 808). Women reporting a history of hip fracture or walking limitations were excluded from the analytic sample, yielding a final sample of 157 583 participants. Fracture events were self-reported and adjudicated annually. Walkability was calculated annually using measures of population density, land use mix, and presence/quantity of nearby high-traffic roadways. Neighborhood green space was calculated annually using measures of exposure to trees/vegetation. Neighborhood SES, walkability, and green space were categorized into tertiles: high, intermediate, and low. The time-varying relationship between neighborhood environmental factors and age at first fracture (any; hip) was examined using extended Cox proportional hazards modeling with adjustment. Neighborhood SES (intermediate vs low: hazard ratio = 1.03, 95% CI, 1.01-1.05; high vs low, hazard ratio = 1.01, 95% CI, 0.99-1.03) and green space (intermediate vs low, hazard ratio = 1.15, 95% CI, 1.12-1.18; high vs low hazard ratio = 1.18, 95% CI, 1.15-1.21) were associated with increased any incident fractures, while walkability had a mixed association (intermediate vs low hazard ratio = 1.06, 95% CI, 1.04-1.07; high vs low, hazard ratio = 0.97, 95% CI, 0.95-0.98). Neighborhood SES, walkability, and green space did not have a relationship with hip fracture after adjustment for important covariates. Results indicate that macroscale neighborhood features did not protect against fractures. Additional research is needed to investigate more granual neighborhood features that might influence injury risk and support physical activity among postmenopausal women.

BackgroundThe aims of this study were to explore associations of the distance and use of urban green spaces with the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and its risk factors, and to evaluate the impact of the accessibility and use of green spaces on the incidence of CVD among the population of Kaunas city (Lithuania).MethodsWe present the results from a Kaunas cohort study on the access to and use of green spaces, the association with cardiovascular risk factors and other health-related variables, and the risk of cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. A random sample of 5,112 individuals aged 45-72 years was screened in 2006-2008. During the mean 4.41 years follow-up, there were 83 deaths from CVD and 364 non-fatal cases of CVD among persons free from CHD and stroke at the baseline survey. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used for data analysis.ResultsWe found that the distance from people’s residence to green spaces was not related to the prevalence of health-related variables. However, the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and the prevalence of diabetes mellitus were significantly lower among park users than among non-users. During the follow up, an increased risk of non-fatal and fatal CVD combined was observed for those who lived ≥629.61 m from green spaces (3rd tertile of distance to green space) (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.36), and the risk for non-fatal CVD–for those who lived ≥347.81 m (2nd and 3rd tertile) and were not park users (HR = 1.66) as compared to men and women who lived 347.8 m or less (1st tertile) from green space. Men living further away from parks (3rd tertile) had a higher risk of non-fatal and fatal CVD combined, compared to those living nearby (1st tertile) (HR = 1.51). Compared to park users living nearby (1st tertile), a statistically significantly increased risk of non-fatal CVD was observed for women who were not park users and living farther away from parks (2nd and 3rd tertile) (HR = 2.78).ConclusionOur analysis suggests public health policies aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles in urban settings could produce cardiovascular benefits.

With the orderly progression of urban renewal in China, social capital, as an important factor in analyzing the relationship between stakeholders, has once again become a key topic in urban planning research. Green spaces have proved to have a more notable impact on social capital than other built environment factors. In light of this, the present study is based on the data of 1,282 residents’ questionnaire surveys conducted in Nanjing in 2022 and extracts spatial characteristic information of green space through multisource big data such as remote sensing data, street-view data, and points of interest, to investigate the influence mechanism of physical and perceived attributes of urban green space on community social capital. The study found that there are differences in the influence mechanisms and dimensions of these dual attributes of green space on social capital. The direct effect of perceptual attributes is more substantial, while physical attributes almost exclusively affect social capital indirectly through the perception of green space. Notably, among the physical attributes, only the total coverage of neighborhood vegetation has a considerable direct effect on neighborhood relations, whereas community sentiment, a willingness to participate, and larger and more aggregated green spaces do not enhance community social capital effectively. Lastly, community social capital is affected substantially by exogenous variables of socioeconomic attributes, and there is group differentiation. Results reveal the direction of renewal and optimization of urban green spaces from the perspective of promoting social capital, which provides a reference for the synergistic and high-quality development of the community’s physical and nonphysical environments.

Background: School-based green space activities have been found to be beneficial to the physical activity level and lifestyle habits of adolescent students. However, their effects on green space use and satisfaction, mental health, and dietary behaviors required further investigation. This study aimed to investigate the effects of school-based hydroponic planting integrated with health promotion activities in improving green space use, competence and satisfaction, healthy lifestyle, mental health, and health-related quality of life (QoL) among early adolescent students in secondary schools.Methods: This study adopted a three-group comparison design (one control and two intervention groups). Secondary school students (N = 553) of grades 7–9 participated in either (1) hydroponic planting (two times per week for 8 months) integrated with health promotion activities; (2) only health promotion activities (one time per week for 6 weeks); or (3) control group. Outcomes assessed by questionnaire included green space use and satisfaction, life happiness, lifestyle, depressive symptoms, and health-related QoL.Results: After adjusting for sex and school grade, the scores in “green space distance and use” and “green space activity and competence” were significantly better in the intervention groups than in the control group. Hydroponic planting integrated with health promotion activities was also associated with better scores in dietary habits and resistance to substance use. Intervention groups had a higher score in “Green space sense and satisfaction” and life happiness when compared with the control group.Conclusions: Our study shows that the school-based hydroponic planting integrated with health promotion activities were feasible and, to a certain extent, useful to improve green space use and competence, dietary habits, and resistance to substance use among early adolescent students in secondary schools in urban areas. Future studies should address the limitations identified, for example, designing a randomized controlled trial that could fit school schedules to generate new evidence for physical and mental health in adolescent communities.

Gajahmungkur Subdistrict is an area that has not fulfilled the minimum percentage of green open space in Semarang City. Problems that arise : How is the implementation of green open space arrangement area of settlement in Gajahmungkur District? What are the factors that influence the implementation of the green open space arrangement area of settlement in the Gajahmungkur District? The purpose of the study is to analyze the implementation of the arrangement of green open space in the Settlement Area in Gajahmungkur District, Semarang City and to find out the factors that influence the implementation of the public green open space arrangement in Gajahmungkur District, Semarang City.The researcher focused on the implementation of the arrangement of settlement area green open space through the use of green open space in the center of the environment, the use of green space on the roadside and the use of green space on the yard / housing yard by taking into account communication, resources. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research methods. The technique used in selecting informants with snowball technique.The results showed that the implementation of Green Open Space in settlement area arrangement in Gajahmungkur Subdistrict had not gone well. There are still many areas in Gajahmungkur Subdistrict that do not meet the requirements of green open space, especially in green open space area in the Environment Center. One of the main causes is poor communication. The intended communication is that there is a lack of good transmission of policies so that there are still many target groups of people who do not know about green open space management, especially through utilization activities. It is recommended to further improve communication with each target group by conducting community socialization on Green Open Space structuring policies in the Settlement Area so that the community understands the importance of Green Open Space in Settlement areas
