Abstract

The article makes a comparison of two types of songs, those of marriage and family relations. The two genres are being compared from the point of view of one theme - the way they treat orphans, a minor social section of society. The common distinguishing feature of the songs is the expression of feelings after the loss of a close person and the exposure of social humiliation. A notable group of ritual songs is distinguished as belonging to the genre of marriage songs due to the specific way their melodies are structured. They stand and a narrow melodic range.The melodic line reflects local peculiarities and often resembles speech intonations. Family songs in the course of their development have acquired new features. They are marked by their wider melodic range, a more distinct rhythmic for mulae, and a more complicated form. Local peculiar ities of the songs have disappeared, and melodies are migrating all over Lithuania.
