Abstract

Abstract An epiphytic diatom living in the mucilage of the apical slit of Fucus vesiculosus is described under the name Navicula fucicola. The valve structure of the new species as seen in the light and electron microscopes is discussed. Taxonomically it seems reasonable to place the species together with Navicula endophytica in the section Naviculae subtilissimae. The cells contain two chloroplasts connected with a plasma bridge. The new species has been observed by the author from four localities in Norway, always in the apical slit of F. vesiculosus.
