Abstract
A mild process for the extraction of radioactive phosphorus form irradiated sulphur has been developed. The phosphorus-containing residues have been examined by chemical analysis, chromatography, adsorption and volatility studies. The possibility that phosphorus sulphides had been formed is ruled out by comparison of the chemical behaviour of irradiated sulphur with mixtures of active elementary phosphorus and sulphur, and known phosphorus sulphides. The presence of phosphates and other phosphorus compounds has been investigated, and all the evidence points to the formation of an ortho-phosphate salt during irradiation.
