Abstract

Submarine cable failures from representative marine environments are examined. Sea-floor regions covered are: current-swept restricted passages, continental and insular shelves, inter-island oceanic passages, continental and insular slopes, oceanic ridges and the ocean basin floor. Chafe by bottom currents is found to be a potential danger to a depth of 300 fathoms in certain locales. Continental slopes, especially when seaward of a river mouth, are especially hazardous.
