Abstract

The late Soviet dictator, Josef Vissarionovich Stalin, used to assert that ‘history belongs to God’. This is a truism favoured by dictators of all kinds throughout history, but it is definitely not true. It implies that the masters of the present can rule and dictate everything — including the past and consequently the future. In the case of Stalin, this implication has failed. There are many alternative interpretations of the recent abrupt changes in Eastern Europe (‘silent revolution’, ‘velvet revolution’, ‘transition from state socialism to capitalism’, etc.). In relation to the issue of nationality we would like to offer an interpretation indicating that, as a result of the changes, historical continuity has been re-established in Eastern Europe. At last, the people of this historical wasteland have got back their history.
