Abstract

Recently described as the 'padre vivente del giallo italiano', Loriano Macchiavelli is responsible for the longest-running Italian detective story series with his Sarti Antonio books. The status of the genre is still in question, especially in Italy, and Macchiavelli's books have been published in some of the less prestigious, more popular collections. Although analyses of detective fiction often focus on its subject matter or take a psychological or sociological approach, in this study I will seek to demonstrate that Macchiavelli's books, whilst situated at the popular end of the genre, are written with a level of narrative sophistication and innovation not normally associated with the genre or its mass readership. In particular I will focus on the narrative functions of the main characters in the books, the position of the narrator, and the use of present-tense narration.
