Abstract

We investigated the efficacy of large-dose steroid therapy in 28 patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, within 2 weeks after disease onset. Facial paralysis were evaluated as severe in all cases. In one group, large dose steroid (starting with 500 mg of methylprednisolone) and an anti-viral agent (Acyclovir) were prescribed for 12 patients. As a result,10 of the 12 patients were completely healed for a cure rate was 83.3%. In the other group, we prescribed 30-60 mg of prednisolone as the initial dose for 16 patients, and 10 were completely healed (cure rate,62.5%). Overall, clinical efficacy was obtained in 21 (75%) of 28 patients. We evaluated our findings compared to those of other studies. Generally, studies using largedose steroid reported relatively better clinical results compared to those of conventional dose oral administration. Five hundred milligrams of methylprednisolone was the largest initial dose among the studies compared. We used 625 mg prednisolone, and our cure rate (83.3%) was relatively higher than those of the other studies.
