Abstract

During the past five years, arthroscopic lateral release was performed on 22 knees in 21 patients. There were 18 females and 3 males and their average age was 19.7 years with a range from 12 to 50 years. All patients were available for follow-up. The average duration of follow-up was 2 years and 5 months with a range from 9 months to 5 years. Nine patients were graded as excellent, 7 patients as good, 4 patients as fair and one patient as poor. In three patients graded as fair, arthroscopic medial reefing was performed at the reoperation and satisfactory results were obtained in all patients at the time of follow-up. One patient graded as poor had distal realignment. All of the knees that needed reoperation had more instability of patello-femoral joint than other cases. Since the degree of patello-femoral instability seemed to be a significant prognostic factor, medial reefing should be added in such knees even if good congruity is obtained by lateral release.
