Abstract

We reported the experience of femoral lengthening by using the Orthofix in five patients. Two patients were male and three were female, whose ages ranged from 12 to 18 years (mean, 14 years). Leg length discrepancy before operation ranged from 2.3 to 8.0cm (mean, 4.3±2.0cm). After performing the subperiosteal osteotomy by bone saw, the femur was distracted 0.5cm two times daily. The gained lengthening ranged from 2.5 to 8.5cm (mean, 4.5±1.9cm). The healing index ranged from 28.0 to 42.4 (mean, 37.1±5.4). Most serious complication was subluxation of the hip joint after 8.5cm lengthening. The subuluxation was reduced by intertrochanteric varus osteotomy. The femoral lengthening by callotasis was a satisfactory procedure for the adolescent patient.
