Abstract

The incidence of osteoporosis has been increasing with the increase in the number of elderly. Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD), and the age of patients who require dental implant matches the age of patients with osteoporosis.The influence of osteoporosis on the healing of an experimental bone defect in the mandible of rats was studied. Twenty-six-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent ovariectomy or a sham operation. Eight weeks after the operation, experimental bone defect was prepared in the left mandible of all rats by the guided bone regeneration (GBR) method. The left mandible of the rats was extracted at 2, 4 or 6 weeks after the operation, and the degree of bone healing in the experimental bone defect was evaluated by soft X-ray photography of the extracted left mandible followed by image analysis.It was found that osteoporosis induced by ovariectomy has a negligible effect on the healing of experimental bone defect in the mandible. The result suggested that osteoporosis of the cortical area of the mandible is slow and less as compared with that of other long bones.
