Abstract
The National Library of Medicine (NLM), which is one of three National Libraries in the United States, is the world's largest research library in a single scientific field. Loan requests to NLM from other libraries must follow the instructions of NLM's Interlibrary Loan Policy and the provisions of the National Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association (ALA). In late 1984, NLM developed DOCLINE, an automated interlibrary loan request and referral system. The system was assembled to offer improved service to the user by rapid routing of interlibrary loan requests throughout the Regional Medical Library Network (RMLN). DOCLINE is linked to MEDLINE (and its backfiles), CATLINE, SERLINE, SERHOLD and AVLINE. Each RMLN has gradually been connected to DOCLINE. In the spring of 1987, the connection was completed and all seven RMLN switched to DOCLINE.
