In Reply.— In our data, 1 the risk of nonfatal myocardial infarction for women who quit smoking is similar to that of women who never smoked, in agreement with the results of many other studies. 2,3 This finding is incompatible with Dr Burch's predisposition argument, unless one assumes that smokers who quit are not constitutionally predisposed to myocardial infarction while smokers who continue are so predisposed.
