Abstract

The purpose of this article is to document the influence of music therapy values clarification activities on assessed levels of locus of control. Two studies were conducted, using a total of 60 adolescent participants currently receiving rehabilitation services for chemical dependency. Participants in the experimental groups attended four 1-hour music therapy discussion groups, which were structured in accordance with the Values Clarification approach (Simon, Howe, & Kirschenbaum, 1978). Control group participants were provided alternate activities. The results of both studies indicated that song lyric analysis activities positively influenced the participants' perceived locus of control. Evidence suggests that the use of music therapy activities focusing on values clarification will allow adolescent clients to develop a positive, healthy attitude toward themselves and their recovery from chemical dependency.
