Abstract
We review the formalism of the recently developed multipole sum rules for single-nucleon transfer reactions. These rules are then applied in detail to available data for a 51V target. From the dipole sum rule we “determine” the spin and magnetic dipole moment of 51V and find good agreement between our direct-reaction deduced values and the known values. The energy-weighted sum rules are also employed to demonstrate the manner in which information about the residual interaction can be extracted from spectroscopic data. The analysis clearly displays the structure of these sum rules.
