Abstract

Arterio-venous malformations (AVM) in the tongue is not a rare condition. It is almost never encapsulated. This made it difficult to treat successfully. There are several procedures that are commonly used in the treatment of AVM such as intralesional injection of sclerosing chemicals, cryosurgery, external irradiation, laser ablation, intralesional injection of corticosteroid and conservative surgical excision. No specific treatment has been reported as the most adequate treatment. In this case report, we performed multiple intralesional ligations using polyfilament sutures as an efficient and secure method of treatment for symptomatic AVM of the tongue. Due to inflammation and mechanical effect the absorbable sutures will cause thrombosis and shrinkage of the vascular lesions. This is a simple and safe method for treating AVM of the tongue with good preservation of tongue function, although multiple operations are required. It is especially useful for critical areas where resection will cause considerable risk and morbidity.
