Abstract
Special purpose machine tools are used when the selection of parts is limited. Control problems in these machines differ from machining centers and other widely used NC and CNC machines. There can be many tools working on the same work piece from different directions and each tool must be controlled independently. Special machines are not produced in large quantities, but are mostly specially tailored for each application. In this paper a control system for them is introduced. It is a hierarchical system with microprocessors. It consist of a lower level position and speed controller for slide units and a higher level controller for work cycle control, display, programming and interface between the user and machine.
