Abstract

Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to analyze 13 trace elements in a drill core of Funafuti fossil corals. Measurements of trace metals (Na, Al, Sc, Mn, Fe, Co, Sr, Eu and U) and halogens in the coral samples were carried out to obtain baseline data in corals. The variations of trace elements with core depth and coral age are reported. About 0.2 g samples were irradiated for 10 seconds to 24 hours in a Triga Mark II Reactor. After irradiation and appropriate cooling, measurements of γ-rays were performed with each sample and standard. In this study we present the trace element data in coral skeletons and discuss the behavior of trace elements in the drill core.
