Abstract

In a magnetar, the dominant magnetospheric source of opacity for soft X‐ray photons is resonant cyclotron scattering. The differential cross‐section for this process is strongly angle‐dependent, which implies that geometry plays a key role in shaping spectra and pulse profiles as measured by a distant observer. Here provide an overview of our work on multidimensional simulations involving the transfer of X‐ray photons through a twisted magnetosphere, and discuss the generic features of the resulting spectra and pulse profiles, with their dependence on the particle energy distribution.
