Abstract

A multicarrier coded 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) system is proposed to achieve high-quality and high bit rate transmission with high spectral efficiency in land mobile radio communications. The system employs a multicarrier transmission scheme to provide immunity against multipath fading distortion. The proposed system also employs pilot symbol aided 16QAM to increase spectral efficiency and a combination of forward error correction (FEC) and space diversity to improve the bit error ratio (BER) performance. Computer simulation shows that a BER of less than 10/sup -4/ is obtained over channels with severe frequency-selective fading with RMS delay spreads /spl les/7.3 /spl mu/sec. It is shown that the proposed system can achieve high-quality transmission with high spectral efficiency.
