Abstract

This article discusses experiences of women’s organization in the remaining quilombola community, in the municipality of Lamarao/BA, this study is linked to the extension Project “Ser Tao Forte: Desenvolvimento Territorial Sustentavel” (Being Strong: Sustainable Territory development) in the formation of Nucleos de Extensao em Desenvolvimento Territorial (NEDET) (Development Extension Centers), developed at the State University of Feira de Santana/BA. The study addresses issues regarding gender relations, rural areas and race/ethnicity, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews and technical visit to another municipality, with the purpose of exchanging knowledge about handicraft manufacture. The interviewees belong to the Associacao Comunitaria de Artesas da Comunidade Remanescente de Quilombos do Sitio Santana (Artisans Community Association), where they produce ceramic utensils. Handicraft is a traditional practice in the community, passed on from one generation to the other and women’s participation is predominant in the practice. Therefore, it represents the conservation of tradition/culture, identity and way of life of those social actors.
