Abstract

In Germany, and more recently also in Switzerland, the legal foundation governing matters of child protection has been clarified and tightened. As a result, the corresponding institutional and governmental structures have been improved noticeably. There is broad public knowledge and agreement that abuse and neglect gravely endanger or disrupt a child's healthy development. There are already a variety of standardized assessment tools to assess the level of risk of abuse and neglect in existence. In light of this it is remarkable, however, how few reliable and effective treatment programs have been established so far in this area. MST-CAN offers a promising and evidence-based treatment option addressing child abuse and neglect. This article highlights the theoretical foundation and treatment concepts of MST-CAN and illustrates the therapeutic methods using a case example.
