Abstract

Mösbauer experiments have been performed on natural and synthetic samples of 4 C monoclinic pyrrhotite Fe 7S 8 down to helium temperature. The spectra at 4.2 K are found to be quite different of those obtained at 77 or 300 K and this change is related to the low temperature transition occuring at T t ∾ 30–35 K . Apart from the contributions of residual impurities, five Fe 2+ sites, with their six absorption lines, are needed to give a good fit of the helium temperature spectra, while the Bertaut model, with only four sites, can account for the high temperature data.
