Abstract

This study calls for a reading of the Libro de buen amor based on a three-pronged approach and, in doing so, it breaks with the dualities usually encountered in the work of Ruizian scholars. Together with an examination of some of the divergent views taken by critics on the hermeneutics of the text, in this study I carry out a detailed survey of the Libro de buen amor, focusing upon the rhetorical or discur- sive stages of inventio (the finding and rendering of subject matter), dispositio (struc- ture and organization) and elocutio (style or mode of expression). Although these rhetorical devices have been analysed separately by critics, this study is the first to examine them together, allowing us to reflect upon the work's overall aims.
