Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the MRI features of giant cell tumour of tendon sheath (GCTTS) and localised nodular synovitis (LNS) of the ankle and foot. Methods and results: The MRI features of eight histologically proven cases of GCTTS and LNS around the ankle and tendon sheaths of the distal foot were evaluated. The lesions were lobulated, measured 2–6 cm in size and in four cases bony erosions were present. Lesions typically displayed slightly inhomogeneous mainly intermediate signal intensity (SI) on T1-weighted SE and T2-weighted FSE MR sequences and usually showed marked enhancement following intravenous contrast. Occasionally, lesions may have a non-specific inhomogeneous appearance on T2W. Conclusions: The typical MRI characteristics of GCTTS/LNS in a classical location in the foot or ankle should suggest the diagnosis but core biopsy before excision is recommended.
