Abstract

In Japan, more than 250,000 people are on chronic hemodialysis, and only approximately 150 deceased donors are available yearly. Average waiting time for kidney transplantation is 16 years. Because of the grave shortage of deceased kidneys in Japan, we have embarked on a new source of organs; diseased kidneys from living patients.
