Abstract

Independent nurse prescribing from a nurse prescribers’ extended formulary was introduced in spring 2002. Ever since, nurses have continually complained that the formulary (comprising 180 prescription only medicines (POMs), plus all pharmacy (P) and general sales list (GSL) medicines), does not suit their needs and does not enable them to deliver the right care to their patients. This ongoing dissatisfaction around the Nurse Prescribers’ Extended Formulary (NPEF) is inevitable and will continue until the entire British National Formulary (BNF) is opened to nurses.
