Abstract

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are widely spread within the population, and a subgroup has progressive degenerative changes with progressive cartilage degeneration and subchondral bone remodeling. Ten to 17% of patients have TMJ osteoarthritis (OA).1,2 Mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells (MSPCs) are critical for tissue regeneration. Moreover, CD105 antigen identifies early MSPCs with increased chondrogenic differentiation ability. The aim of this study was to evaluate a mouse temporomandibular joint (TMJ) derived CD105+ MSPC subgroup (mCoSPC) on functionalized biosilica incorporating hydrogel scaffolds, under chondrogenic stimulus, on fibrocartilage composition for cartilage formation.
