Abstract

A dilute solution of procaine in glucose solution was given by slow drip intrathecally in the lumbar region to patients with spasticity and to 2 “control” subjects suffering from pelvic cancer. It caused a differential block. In the spastic patients when the differential block was maximal a flexion-abduction reflex occurred. At the same time in most of the patients extensor tone was diminished and flexor tone was increased. It was concluded that these effects resulted from the combined effect of removal of the stretch reflexes with control of the final common path by Golgi tendon organs and other flexor reflex afferents. These effects lasted to some extent after the differential anaesthesia had passed off, persisting in some patients for days.
