Abstract

This article explores the fifth episode of Agnès Varda's documentary series for ARTE, Agnès de ci de là Varda (2011), examining its recurring attention to images of flesh and mortality, from Venice Beach graffiti and Rogier Van Der Weyden's angels, to the paintings of Frida Kahlo and the sculptures of Maillol. Through Judith Butler's work on vulnerability, and in particular on associations between grief and desire, in Undoing Gender, the moves of Varda's very recent work are associated with broader trends in her filmmaking, from L'Opéra-Mouffe forwards, to use flesh, and its meanings, to think through questions about affect and ethics.
