Abstract
As the composition of the alloy is varying along the monovariant line between the two-phase Cd-Sn eutectic and the three-phase Cd-Sn-Pb eutectic, the evolution of the unidirectional solidification microstructure can be described in five stages: (a) lamellar Cd-Sn eutectic; (b) eutectic cells; (c) plates separated by three-phase Cd-Sn-Pb walls; (d) binary eutectic dendrites; (e) three-phase Cd-Sn-Pb eutectic. For the three-phase eutectic, the interlamellar spacing λ obeys the usual law: λ 2V = constant = 16 x 10 -12 cm 3 s -1.
