Abstract

During the first half of 1983 there were more significant earthquakes but fewer resulting deaths worldwide than during the same period last year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The number of significant earthquakes increased to 31 from 29 for the same period in 1982, while deaths decreased to 154 from 167. Only one significant earthquake and no deaths were reported in the United States this year. Significant earthquakes are defined as shocks that register as 6.5 or more on the Richter scale or those that register lower yet still cause casualties or considerable damage.
