Abstract
N his provocative work, The Doctrine of Grace in the Apostolic Fathers, Thomas F. Torrance argues that the use of the word plithunO in the Salutatio of First Clement might imply that one can have more or less of grace.' He then tells us that in Pauline doctrine the idea that one can have more or less of grace is impossible.2 In this way he tries to strengthen his thesis about the great divergence of the apostolic fathers from New Testament teaching.3 We shall not, however, concern ourselves here with Torrance's interpretation of First Clement, although it may be noted that his position is not altogether unassailable. Rather, we shall examine what he says about St. Paul.
