Abstract

In a previous paper, techniques were constructed for calculating the density fluctuations resulting from quantum effects in the inflationary universe. These techniques can be developed to cover the later stages of inflation and the effects of fluctuations in multiple Higgs fields and axions. Magnetic monopoles are thereby produced which rule out the minimal SU(5) GUT but are unlikely to cause problems if the model can be modified to reduce the density fluctuations. If a second period of inflation occurs at the Weinberg-Salam phase transition, then this would produce a lower cut-off in the axion fluctuation spectrum at a mass of around 10 22 g.
