Abstract

This article compares More’s Utopia to Peter Martyr’s De Orbe Novo and to its plagiarized version Paesi nouamente ritrouati…. The point is made in this article of the fact that, given the number of editions and translations, including Latin and French, of Paesi between 1507 and 1516, More might have had the opportunity to read it. The new philosophy of De Orbe Novo shows several points of contact with the Northern European Humanists. They differed with the Italian traditional humanists in the method and the language. They were in favor of new ideas and a new language, in order to explain a new reality.
