Abstract

This article describes a nonmoralizing approach to moral issues and superego problems which arise in the course of marital therapy. Drawing on both well-known and neglected aspects of superego functioning, the article discusses (a) marriage vows and responsibility in marriage, (b) moral education and superego development, (c) differences in superegos of men and women, (d) the role of empathy in superego functioning, (e) the capacity for apology and forgiveness, (f) corrupt alliances, and (g) superego transference and countertransference.
